Premana, located on the slopes of Mount
Legnone (altitude 2610 m) in the Orobie Alps, is a small
village of 2300 inhabitants renowned all over the world for
the production of scissors and cutting tools. The secular
tradition goes back to the Middle Ages when the iron mines
situated in the high Valley of the River Varrone were already
exploited.
The ovens used for the fusion of the extracted
material were active up to the middle of the 19 th century
and, along the river Varrone, the water wheels set in action
the hammers to forge the metal.
Since 1600, skilled sword-makers
and blacksmiths worked in Premana forging scissors, knives
as well as grilles, keys, locks and "combs" for
the gondolas in Venice.
